Great Minds Drink Alike: Chapel Down

In the spirit of Great Minds Drink Alike, Chapel Down has joined forces with ten like-minded boutique wineries from around the world to present a selection of first-rate, limited production to augment its portfolio. This first ‘Great Minds Drink Alike’ collection contains wines from remarkable producers across the New and Old Worlds, including outstanding examples of lesser known grape varietals from Spain, Italy, Portugal and Australia in two mixed cases that are complemented by Chapel Down wines.

I’ve tasted each and every one and can vouch for their fine quality. I would be amazed if you don’t enjoy them as much as I do.” Jonathan Ray, Drinks Editor. The Spectator Some of the favourites from the first Great Minds collection are listed below to give you a flavour of what’s included in the range:

Gotas de Mar Godello 2016 (Ribeiro, Spain)

Having been virtually extinct in the 1970s with just 250 vines in existence, Godello is enjoying a welcome renaissance and could soon be rivalling Albariño in popularity. This example, crafted by winemaker David Tofterup, is wonderfully aromatic on the nose with crisp, clean and fresh fruit in the mouth. If you haven’t tried Godello before – even if you have – this is a must.

J. Côtes du Provence Rosé 2016 (Côtes de Provence, France)

This little cracker is produced by Julian Faulkner at Le Grand Cros in Provence. The critics love it (Jancis Robinson is a huge fan) and, blended as it is from the classic Provencal triumvirate of Cinsault, Grenache and Mourvèdre, it’s impossible to fault, from its salmon pink colour to its ripe, spicy and creamy finish.

Pertaringa ‘Undercover’ Shiraz 2015 (McLaren Vale, Australia)

Geoff Hardy left the family firm of Thomas Hardy & Sons in 1980 to set up Pertaringa, a winery which has since been festooned with awards. Winemaker Shane Harris is nothing if not skilled and this Shiraz, crammed full of ripe plums and damsons with whispers of vanilla, liquorice and chocolate, is an absolute belter.
