Woodchester Valley Global Masters Certificate

English Sauvignon Blanc wins Gold medal in Global Masters

During these unusual and stressful times, it’s good to have something to celebrate. Woodchester Valley Vineyard in Gloucestershire have just revealed that they have won a Gold medal for their 2018 Sauvignon the Drinks Business’ Global Sauvignon Blanc Masters challenge, whose results have just been formally announced. Woodchester Valley is the only UK producer to have ever achieved a Gold medal for Sauvignon Blanc and one of only 10 wines awarded Gold from hundreds of wines entered worldwide. As the Masters competitions are judged blind without reference to country this English ‘wild card’ Sauvignon Blanc was among favourites from around the world.

This is the second International Gold medal for this wine following International Wine & Spirit Competition (IWSC) awards last year where it achieved 96 points .

Woodchester Valley Founder Fiona Shiner says “We are thrilled that the wine has been recognised again with such a prestigious accolade. This really is a milestone for our Cotswold Vineyard which has placed an equal focus on still wine production against the trend for Sparkling wines prevailing in current plantings”.

Winemaker Jeremy Mount was working in New Zealand at the Matua winery, producing Sauvignon Blanc wines before joining Woodchester Valley in 2016. When first finding out about the planting of Sauvignon Blanc he was a little sceptical, but says “being able to make a good Sauvignon Blanc in England shows that for us here at Woodchester, with our steep sided vineyard sites and favourable climatic conditions over the last couple of years, that the future of English still wine productions is extremely bright.”

Only a limited volume was produced. The wine is currently available on their website, with free UK mainland delivery on 6 bottles or over during the current lockdown period.

And a food recommendation? Fiona Shiner suggest: “Why not try with our recommended food pairing from resident WVV chef Aaron Rice; Twice Baked Goats Cheese Souffle with Grilled Apsaragus”
