New specialist English wine retailer launched


A new retailer specialising in English wines has recently been launched, with an innovative approach to introducing them to the UK consumer. Rather than being a marketplace, Corkk demonstrates the wide varietal and distinctive nature English wines have, by selecting and offering just a few each month.

Corkk is the brainchild of Jonathan Piggins, who lives in Kent and became inspired by the viticultural revolution taking place on his own doorstep.

To achieve this, Jonathan works with Clive Barlow MW to source the wines for each month’s offering. A Master of Wine for over 20 years, Clive is Panel Chair for the International Wine Challenge, was Director of Education for the renowned Institute of Masters of Wine and is founder of the Canterbury Wine Festival. He is based out of Canterbury and knows many of the local vineyards.

Each month Clive tastes many wines and selects just 6 to be added to the Corkk website, introducing some of the best, most distinctive wines England and Wales has to offer. Corkk are always delighted to hear from any producers looking to supply.

Consumers can either subscribe, where they receive a selection of new wines each month, buy direct from the online shop, or give as gift. A range of boxes is offered so that customers can try different wines. Each box comes with tasting notes for each of the wines to help enhance the appreciation of the wines.

Comments Jonathan: “Living in rural Kent we are in the heart of this growth but as someone who likes to drink a drop or two, I was acutely aware that I knew very little about the wine being produced.

This, and sharing a good bottle with friends and family, led to Corkk. Having researched, there were a few things that stood out. Firstly, English wine is very good, that the market will experience an explosive growth over the next 20 years, that our winemakers are exceptionally creative and innovative and there is a sense of joy and pride in what is being produced. However, this is still relatively unknown across the wider country.”

He added: “We soft launched in December 19 and fully launched in March this year. The response has been overwhelmingly positive, especially on the quality of the wines – the word delicious comes up a lot. Furthermore, we are seeing a great spread of orders from up and down the country, including Scotland, Cheshire, Durham and Devon.
