English wine is in a period of rapid change and expansion and with so many new names appearing, now is a great time to take stock of the whole scene and see where the real centres of quality are.
Tim Atkin MW has commissioned English wine expert Tom Hewson to do an in-depth analysis of the English wine scene and the result is the England 2021 Special Report, the first English report to feature in his series of widely-respected wine reports.
This is one of the biggest single tastings of English Wines ever undertaken. Tom tasted more than 250 wines, blind, in all styles, including many debut vintages and soon-to-be released cuvées. Each of the wines has been scored with comprehensive tasting notes. The report also gives essential background information, fresh analysis and opinion on the English wine industry. 11 top awards were given recognising not only some of the best quality ever produced in England, but also those offering genuine value for money with two ‘Best Value’ awards.
Tom said on completing the report “I’ve been following English wine closely for over five years, getting to know everyone from producers and growers to viticulturalists and vineyard workers as they work in the extremely dynamic environment. It was a real privilege to taste such a comprehensive cross-section of the wines being produced side by side, with time and space for each, and get to grips with some of the most promising developments in both still and sparkling production. There is a great deal to be excited about, and not just from wines that make the headlines. As English wine continues to expand it starts to rub shoulders more and more with its international counterparts. This makes it the perfect time to put together a report that sits next to those Tim Atkin MW produces for some of the world’s highest-profile wine regions, to give a sense of England’s direction as more and more new names start to emerge.”
The report will be launched with an InstaLive @six_atmospheres on Sunday 10th September at 6.30pm at which Tom will annouce his 11 awards. The report will then be available to download from www.timatkin.com.
