The WineGB Awards is the national competition for the English and Welsh wine industry. Organised and run by WineGB, the aim and purpose of the Awards is to send out a powerful message of the quality, consistency and variety of our wines. This is made so because our competition’s wines are judged rigorously and to the highest standards. Co-chaired by leading wine experts, writers and presenters Susie Barrie MW and Oz Clarke OBE, the judges involved are all actively involved in the wine trade and possess a professional knowledge of the industry’s wines.
The competition is embraced by producers of all sizes, with some of the smallest producers’ wines tasted alongside very largest in the country, and the newest producers in the GB wine industry pitched against some of the most established and respected.
The judging process:
Judging normally takes about four days. All the wines are tasted blind and in style category flights. The wines are tasted in judges’ groups for the first two days. If a group of judges are undecided about any wine, those wines are reviewed by the Co-Chairs. All the Gold medals are then retasted blind on day 3 to select trophies. The trophy winners are then tasted again to select the Top Still and Top Sparkling and from those the Supreme Champion.
"In an uncertain world, with the cost of living soaring, one thing we all know for sure in 2022 is that UK consumers are looking to spend their 'wine budget' wisely. Reliable recommendations are therefore paramount, and a medal from WineGB is one of the best endorsements around. Every year we taste hundreds of English and Welsh wines and award medals to the very best the UK has to offer.”
Susie Barrie MW
“Each year our established vineyards mature, new vineyards offer up their first crops, and new areas of the country start to show what special things they can do. All of these are represented in our Awards. You don't have to be famous to be best, as our medals show. And if you are famous, our Awards provide the spur to do even better. With three fascinating vintages - 2018/19/20 - in full flow, with more sparkling wines than ever being offered with good bottle age, and with 2021 providing some tasty surprises, this year's Awards promise to be the most exciting ever.”
Oz Clarke OBE
The competition is sponsored by suppliers of bottle closures to the drinks industry, Rankin Bros & Sons. Jim Rankin, Commercial Director, says:
“The WineGB Awards not only celebrate the finest wines and winemaking skills in England and Wales, they also help to elevate the profile, quality and desirability of all wines produced here, right across the globe.”
The WineGB Awards 2022 is now open to entries – details are available on the members’ area of this site.
The judging will take place 13-16 June, with the medal results announced on 24 June, during English Wine Week. The top trophies including the ultimate winner, Supreme Champion, will be unveiled at the WineGB Awards ceremony on Friday 15 July.
Until then …
